Myanmar's Hidden Gem
Hpa-An - Kayin State - Myanmar
What can be seen in the video?
A Jewel. Like that, capitalized. Hpa-An is 100% worth it.
The first place you can see is the sunrise from Zwe Kabin Mountain. My recommendation is to tackle the 3600+ steps in the early morning to avoid the heat. Getting to the start point around 4:30 AM should give you plenty of time to see the sun come out from the summit. It took us a bit more than 1 hour to get to the top (I would say 90 minutes is the average time) and the entrance fee is 4000 Kyats.
Next stop is one of the many caves with Buddhist representations in Hpa-An, Mahar Sadan Cave. The size of the cave is impressive and, at the end of it, you can take a boat for 5 minutes to go under the mountain - the price is 4000 Kyats per boat (which you can share).
Kyaut Ka Latt Pagoda is the pagoda in equilibrium on top of the rock. It gives you the impression that it is going to collapse at any moment and it is just a stunning view. I guess any time is good to visit it, but sunset light is unbeatable.
Another cave with Buddhist representation is Yathae Pyan Cave. It is similar to the previous one but, at the end, you can find monkeys and a gateway with great views.
For me, the Crown Jewel is the sunset in Taung Wine Pagoda. The climb can be done in 30-45 minutes with quick stops. I must say that the metallic stairs at the end produce vertigo, but, without a doubt, is worth the climb. And moreover, it is free! Do NOT trust Google Maps directions. Head to Taung Ka Lay and stay on that road, without leaving it, and you will arrive at the start of the steps.
Finally, hire a scooter and go to different places at your own pace.
